“The parenting assessment report is a truly impressive document, and certainly to my mind confirms the confidence this Court has, not just as a criminal judge, but also in the field of Public Law and Private Law, in the social workers of this jurisdiction. A truly impressive report and if anything had an impact on me over and above your plea of guilty and the very able submission … it is that report.” - Judge Durham Hall Cardiff County Court

Good Practice Guidance on Working with Parents with a Learning Disability

In the last six years there have been a number of policy initiatives and guidance documents aimed at improving the life opportunities for people with learning disabilities. In June 2007, Good Practice Guidance on Working with Parents with a Learning Disability was published jointly by the Department of Health and the then Department for Education and Skills. The overarching principle of the guidance is that people with learning disabilities, ‘have the right to be supported in their parenting role, just as their children have the right to live in a safe and supportive environment’.

The recommendations in the guidance are underpinned by current legislation and statutory guidance for both children’s and adult services, and also by disability discrimination legislation.
