Independent Social Work Services

“The parenting assessment report is a truly impressive document, and certainly to my mind confirms the confidence this Court has, not just as a criminal judge, but also in the field of Public Law and Private Law, in the social workers of this jurisdiction. A truly impressive report and if anything had an impact on me over and above your plea of guilty and the very able submission … it is that report.” - Judge Durham Hall Cardiff County Court

Jane worked for Local Authority Social Services Departments and the NSPCC from 1994 as a Social Worker.

Jane has developed extensive experience within the child protection arena, particularly relating to sexual abuse including attending court as an Expert Witness. During Jane’s employment in Guernsey she also acted as Court Welfare Officer and Guardian ad Litem.

Jane undertook the Memorandum of Good Practice training in 1995 and then in 2002 specialist training in interviewing techniques for children and adults with the Police. She has worked with and compiled risk assessments of children and juveniles who have harmful sexual behaviours. Jane has worked with adult perpetrators of sexual offences against children for the last twelve years. Whilst working in Guernsey, together with colleagues in Probation, she helped develop and run a community group work programme for adult males.

When Jane returned to the UK she was employed with the NSPCC Dangerous Adults Team. During this time Jane facilitated community group work programmes and completed the Home Office Accredited training in risk assessment and management of sex offenders.

Jane has played a key role in developing training programmes for professionals in respect of supervising contact between sex offenders and children and safe caring of children who may have been sexually harmed or present harmful sexual behaviours.

Since 2002 Jane has provided independent assessments in Private and Public Law cases, including risk of harmful sexual behaviours. She has also developed and facilitated groupwork programmes for non-abusing female carers, including partners and other family members.

Jane has undertaken assessments of children with disabilities in respect of Tribunal Hearings and Judicial Review and has become one of a small number of practitioners instructed by solicitors and barristers in this specific area of practice, and is therefore deemed to be expert in matters relating to children and disabilities.

She has been commissioned by barristers, courts and local authorities both in Wales and England in respect of child protection and risk assessments relating to parenting ability, including community-based assessments. She has also undertaken assessment of contact between children and their families, and has given expert witness evidence in all the above matters.

Jane is a registered social worker with the Care Council for Wales, Registration No: W/1004883 and the General Social Care Council in England, Registration No. 1004883. She is also a member of the BASW Children and Families Sub-Committee and NOTA (National Organisation for Treatment of Abusers)

In September 2005 Jane successfully completed the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness training programme, and will continue to attend relevant training to ensure her professional development.
