Groupwork Programme : Non-abusing Female Carers’

We passionately believe that work with those who have harmful sexual behaviours should be undertaken in a systemic manner to provide effective control and to reduce the number of victims. We have therefore developed this programme in recognition of the need to protect children from the risk of harmful sexual behaviour.

The Non-Abusing Carers’ Groupwork Programme is a cognitive behavioural programme for female carers who are planning to maintain a relationship, either as partner or family member, with a man where there has been an allegation or conviction of a sexual offence against a child.

The aim of the programme is to assess and enhance the woman’s capacity to protect children from harmful sexual behaviour. All participants are subject to an initial assessment designed to decrease denial/minimisation of the offence and assess their suitability for groupwork.

The programme invites women to explore their beliefs, attitudes and practices related to harmful sexual behaviour against children. It is a resource for Local Authority Social Services Departments, Probation and the Police. The nature of this programme provides participants with knowledge which they introduce into their personal living situation enabling them to implement strategies from the outset, thus promoting and reinforcing on-going learning.

This programme was developed in 2002 following the establishment of JLS Consultancy. The wide geographical area covered by JLS Consultancy and the client group has resulted in the necessity to run the groups on a weekly basis in conjunction with the educational calendar.

The Non-Abusing Female Carers Groupwork programme is designed to accommodate between six and ten participants. It will provide a minimum of 70 hours individual assessment of each participant during Groupwork sessions; this will include an initial assessment and a final feedback session to discuss the content of the report and our findings.

A comprehensive report of participants’ progress will be made available to the commissioning agency on completion of the course.
